International Cricket Centre

The MCA Pune International CricketStadium comprises a 60,000 seater cricket stadium to meet full international cricket standards, supported by a Cricket Academy and a Sports & Spa Building. The programme envisaged the Stadium to be completed by the end of 2010 and fully operational for the Cricket World Championships in early 2011. Noteworthy features of the project include a site located in virgin agricultural land, served by a relatively poor utilities infrastructure network, thereby requiring a relatively high degree of servicing autonomy. Many of the events to be held at the Cricket Stadium will be broadcast live, and therefore the power supplies to the broadcast equipment and lighting must be resilient. One of the main challenges of the building services design is the provision of appropriate levels of resilience, achieved by the integration of generator and utility power supplies, to optimise the configuration. BDSP were brought on board to provide an integrated architectural and structural services design, which is unheard of in India, in order to take the project from Concept to end of Scheme Design. BDSP role also included close contact with TCE the Indian Engineers in order to realise the architectural vision but to work in line with local practices.

TC Usce

Shopping Centre in Belgrade

The Ušće Shopping Centre in New Belgrade opened on 1st April 2009 and is the largest retail gallery in the region. It is located at the foot of the Ušće Tower – the tallest building in Belgrade – which was refurbished and reopened in 2005 following damage during the 1999 NATO bombings. The centre is a joint development by MPC Holdings and Merrill Lynch representing a €150 million investment. It accommodates around 150 shops plus restaurants, bars and a multiplex cinema and has attracted flagship international brands. BDSP were MEP engineers for both the Ušće Tower itself and the Shopping Centre.

Museum of Contemporary Art

The existing Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade was built in 1965 and is considered as one of the best examples of 1960’s modernist architecture in Central and Eastern Europe.

The building requires major refurbishment and a complete overhaul of building services to bring the museum’s facilities up to date. BDSP was leading the design team and was responsible for designing all of the installations according to current best practice European standards for museums and galleries. BDSP used object oriented modelling to create a flexible, fully attributed 3D model of the building as a base for all subsequent works.

National Museum of Serbia

Refurbishment of a 100 year old museum building.

The National Museum in Belgrade is considered an important symbol of Serbian culture - it houses priceless artefacts and masterpieces which chart the history of the region and people. The project involves the complete refurbishment of the 100 year old building to meet current world-class standards for museums and galleries.

BDSP is part of the design team, with responsibility for microclimate and environmental engineering. An object oriented and co-ordinated 3D model of all services installations was developed and extensive environmental simulations were undertaken to optimise passive and active design strategies.

Central Market Souk

Three tall buildings in Abu Dhabi

The Central Market development encompasses three tall buildings: being T1 the hotel (58 storeys), T2 the residential (58 storeys) and T3 the office tower (88 storeys), towering above the building of the Souk and the retail markets, which covers an area of approximately 6 hectares. The approach to the overall energy performance of the project was to achieve efficiency through a holistic design looking at aspects of building form, facades’ treatment and systems, in the harsh hot climate of Abu Dhabi.

The retail reproduces the qualities of the high-end international shopping malls, whilst the souk resembles the environmental aspects of the traditional Arabic market, filtering light, sun and air. For the three communal areas of the market buildings, a mixedmode environmental strategy was specified alternating natural ventilation with air conditioning in permanently shaded spaces. The modular operable roof structures that cover the main internal squares can be opened during the mild periods of the year, allowing for natural ventilation and rain to fall over the squares, avoiding infiltration problems in the roof.

The roof tops were treated with vegetation and other shading devices to be occupied during the mild periods of the year. Simulations of computational fluid dynamics confirmed the positive impact of the towers in the over comfort conditions of the terraces due to increments in wind patterns. .

Velodrome

Stadium for the London 2012 Olympics

BDSP are working with Hopkins Architects on the Velodrome for the London 2012 Olympics. This new 6,000 spectator stadium will be located at the north end of the Olympic Park and will hold the 250m track. During the summer the stadium will be naturally ventilated, whilst in winter the arena will be heated by mechanical ventilation. The arena will be day-lit whenever possible; although the track will have a carefully detailed lighting system appropriate for sport broadcast. To the east of the Stadium will sit the Olympic BMX track, which will use the athletes and spectator facilities within the Velodrome. After the Olympics and Paralympic Games, the Velodrome will continue to be used for international cycling events as well as by the community, whilst the surrounding Velopark will be transformed for the community including a road cycling circuit, mountain bike trails, cycling speedway and a modified BMX track.

Europolis Bratislava

This speculative mixed-use development consists of 8 plots comprising 140,000m2 of space for offices, retail and hotel. The challenge: to design high quality buildings with high spatial efficiency and flexibility in use combined with excellent environmental performance and low running costs.
Key BDSP inputs include the integrated water management strategy (demand reduction, green roofs etc.) and mixedmode ventilation strategies (including use of chilled slabs). A significant part of site cooling and heating demands will be met by an open-loop groundwater scheme, with solar collectors proposed for hotel and fitness centre.

Dancing Green

Family holiday resort

“DancingGreen” is a world class family holiday resort for 4,000 guests being developed by Eurasia Country Format in the Tula Oblast south of Moscow.
The Foster + Partners masterplan was launched at the Munich EXPO REAL (October 2008). Sensitively located on the east bank of the River Oka, it will comprise of a series of major public buildings together with ~750 residential villas and many outdoor trails clustered along the shore of a newly created lake or nestling within existing forests.
High environmental quality (by enhancing biodiversity and minimising interventions in the forest) combined with high environmental performance will be hallmarks of the scheme.

Silken Hotel

(ME Hotel)

Situated on a premium site on the Strand in London, this 14 storey high development comprises a five star hotel with 170 rooms and serviced apartments located behind a retained Grade II listed façade. Accommodation includes basement car parking, bar, restaurant, banqueting and spa facilities. One of the key architectural features is the pyramidal glazed atrium bringing daylight to the communal spaces at ground floor level and to the guest room corridors which are connected to the atrium. In this respect, simulation modelling was applied to maximise the use of daylight.
The rooms and facilities are fully conditioned throughout the year. The building services were designed using the BIM platform (Building Information Modelling) throughout all phases of the design including the tendering stages. Given the complex architectural geometry, the use of BIM was especially advantageous for the communication between the various design players.

Las Arenas

Barcelona, Spain

RSH+P’s vision for this iconic yet disused Spanish bullring/arena in Plaza de España, focused on retaining the existing façade whilst integrating five floors of cultural and leisure functions, with a central exhibition/ event space topped by a large musical venue space supported by restaurant facilities.
The environmental strategy categorized the building into three zones – naturally ventilated spaces; mixed mode and fully conditioned spaces - to minimize the energy demand profile of the development and associated carbon footprint. The numerous arches of the existing façade form an integral part of this passive design concept and integrating the M&E services within the dome structure proved equally challenging.

USCE Tower Business Centre

Business and shopping centre in Belgrade

The USCE Business Centre (Tower) and Shopping Centre are located at one of the most attractive locations within New Belgrade: the confluence of Sava and Danube rivers. The 25-storey Business Centre stands at over 141m high creating the tallest business structure in the Balkans. USCE Business Centre, with a total area of 31,000m2, was modified and completely re-clad according to the latest European standards, with flexible office space, easily adaptable to tenants’ requirements. HOK London completed the concept solution for reconstruction of the building and SLAVIA Biro continued with the final design.
BDSP led the design team responsible for the building services. The retrofit focused on issues of thermal comfort, energy efficiency and the associated environmental impact. Although the existing building had an originally low level of electricity demand, the new energy efficient services did not require a higher capacity transformer. The central chilled water plant is based on an ice storage system which significantly reduces the demand for electrical energy. Current trends in flexible office HVAC design for the commercial market also had a key role to play in the energy efficiency of the retrofit. From the perspective of the architectural design, at the top of the building a ten meter high multifunctional space is enclosed by an internally ventilated double skin façade.

SEEP

Serbian Energy Efficiency Project

The Serbia Energy Efficiency Project (SEEP) was set up to improve energy efficiency in a large number of existing public buildings across all regions of the country to make them more affordable to operate and to improve the quality of the internal environment, with a strong emphasis on delivery and quantification of these benefits.
The SEEP project is funded by credits from the International Development Association and a Loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (The World Bank). BDSP Partnership’s London and Belgrade offices formed a joint-venture vehicle with Energoprojekt ENTEL to provide design and decision support services on the project.
All stages of the project include survey and monitoring of existing buildings; evaluation and selection of complimentary packages of energy efficiency measures; implementation of refurbishment works (including design, tender, supervision, commissioning and handover); post-refurbishment monitoring and verification of savings. Overall, significant energy savings have been identified for the first group of buildings, showing an average saving of 40%, with associated CO2 emission reductions of similar magnitude. In addition, the average simple payback period on investment across all buildings was found to be about 7.5 years.
